One of the most common questions from people new to orgonite is about the crystals — why are they there, what do they do, and does it matter which ones you use? This guide covers the theory behind crystals in orgonite and the most commonly used stones.
Why Are Crystals Used in Orgonite?
Karl Hans Welz’s original orgonite formula consisted of metal shavings suspended in resin. The addition of crystals — most commonly quartz — came from the understanding that certain minerals interact with orgone energy in specific ways.
Quartz crystal is the most widely used because of its piezoelectric properties: when placed under mechanical pressure — such as the pressure exerted by curing resin — quartz generates an electrical charge. Proponents of orgonite argue that this piezoelectric effect amplifies and stabilises the orgone field generated by the metal matrix.
The Most Common Crystals in Orgonite
Clear Quartz
The standard choice. Clear quartz is valued for its amplifying properties — it is said to enhance whatever energy surrounds it. In orgonite, it is almost always present, usually as a point oriented vertically to direct energy upward.
Black Tourmaline
One of the most popular additions for EMF protection. Black tourmaline is associated with grounding and protective energy, and is frequently combined with orgonite in devices intended for placement near routers, smart meters or electrical equipment.
Amethyst
A high-vibration crystal associated with calm, clarity and spiritual awareness. Amethyst is commonly used in orgonite intended for meditation spaces or bedroom environments.
Shungite
A carbon-rich mineral from Russia with a growing reputation in EMF research. Shungite contains fullerenes — unique carbon structures — and is increasingly used in orgonite as a complement to metal shavings for its claimed protective properties.
Selenite
Associated with cleansing and high-frequency energy. Selenite is sometimes added to orgonite to keep the energetic field clear and prevent stagnation.
Does the Crystal Choice Matter?
In practical terms, most orgonite makers agree that clear quartz is the foundation — the non-negotiable element. Beyond that, crystal selection is often guided by intention: what the device is for, where it will be placed, and what energetic qualities the maker wants to emphasise.
There is no peer-reviewed science confirming crystal energy properties. But within the orgonite community, the combination of metal, resin and intentionally chosen crystals is understood as a system — each element contributing to the overall function of the device.
Where to Start
If you are new to orgonite and want to explore crystal combinations, start with clear quartz and black tourmaline — the two most versatile and widely used stones. From there, let your research and intuition guide you.
